Meet the Farmers
Home Farm has been owned by the Smith family for over 117 years, and is currently run by the fourth, fifth, and sixth generation of the farming family. Find out more about us.
Elaine Smith
Elaine is Paul’s wife and a teacher who married into the farming lifestyle. Over the last 20 years, she has learnt everything about dairy farming from scratch, and has developed Lancashire Farm Education Centre to share this knowledge. Elaine has become more involved in the farm over the years and monitors cow data and information to improve performance and quality throughout the farm. Elaine has experience of teaching in Secondary and Primary schools for over 22 years.
Paul Smith
Paul is David and Kath’s youngest son and now runs the daily operations at Home Farm. Paul turns his hand to a wide variety of jobs from feeding the cows, tractor work, foot trimming, AI, cow welfare and farm maintenance. Paul has revolutionised the farm by investing in DeLaval milking robots and technology to improve farm welfare and productivity. In his spare time Paul enjoys films, shooting and going out for a nice meal. You will see Paul at the farm during school visits and events as he is very passionate about educating people about farming, especially about where food comes from.
Harry Smith
Harry is Paul and Elaine’s eldest son who is following in the family footsteps and is studying a Level 3 in Agriculture at Myerscough College. Harry loves anything with an engine and particularly enjoys tractor work. He loves his dogs and as all teenagers do, gaming (including Farm Simulator!). Harry also enjoys going out with friends and is a member of Young Farmers.
James Smith
As the younger of the two children, James is at High School and is studying for his GCSE’s. He loves being out at the farm and will give anything a go. James also wants to go to Myerscough to study agriculture after school, and when he’s not tending to the cows, he enjoys gaming, training at the gym, swimming, and hanging out with friends.
Kath Smith
Kath has been involved in dairy farming from a young age, working on her family’s farm in Blackburn before meeting David and moving to Croston. Kath used to be a child minder for many years and helped the village through her involvment with Croston Scouts. She has a love of horses and breeds under the “Yarrow” prefix. Kath is also involved in various judging panels and the Sports Horse Breeding organisation in the Northwest.
David Smith
Home Farm has been in David’s family for over 100 years. Born in Eccleston, David has farmed with his family from a young age, later meeting his future wife Kath at Young Farmers and building their family home at Home Farm in 1973. Although David loves being around the cows and youngstock, doing whatever needs to be done to keep them happy and healthy. David loves sharing his knowledge and experience and is proud to be faming alongside his son and teaching his two grandchildren the ways of farming.
